He treats patients with depression and shows them how they continue to keep themselves depressed by their actions: they isolate themselves, stay in bed, avoid exercise, ruminate, and basically perpetuate their depression by keeping themselves in it. While the advice for people suffering from depression includes getting some exercise, fresh air, and human contact, he uses a "reverse psychology" technique, asking them, "Teach me how to be depressed. You are so good at being depressed and knowing how to stay there--if I wanted to learn to be depressed, what would you tell me to do?". The patients can realize their predicament as they explain how to stay depressed, telling Bill to 'stay inside, don't answer your phone so you won't even speak to people who reach out to you, remain in your bed clothes for most of the day and don't brush your hair or do anything to improve your appearance'. The light bulb goes off over their head as they see how they've been feeding their depression, and see that if they do the opposite they may help themselves out of their situation.

He asks his patients who are overweight the same thing: Teach me how to be fat.

So let me ask you: You're an expert--you've been overweight your whole life--if you wanted to explain to someone how they could stay heavy and not lose weight, what would you tell them?

You might say, "Take every opportunity to eat! Even if you aren't hungry, if someone has cookies or candy out, take advantage and eat it.
When there is food left, finish it. Even if you've had enough for dinner--even when you feel stuffed!--be sure to have the rest of the food so it won't go to waste.
Use high-calorie foods and cooking methods: Never bake or broil, but fry most of your food. And add butter or oil to everything you can.... potatoes, salad, bread, and even vegetables which are naturally low-calorie.

Before bed time when you're relaxing, don't let this time go by without something to eat! You shouldn't have any down time when it comes to ingesting calories. A nice bowl of ice cream or a piece of cake will help you settle down to sleep.
Never plan ahead when it comes to meals. If you bring your lunch to work it might be something portion-controlled or healthy. Wait until it's time to eat and then grab whatever is fast--it will usually be something from a fast-food restaurant and these are normally high-fat and high-calorie selections. They also don't have anything to choose from for side dishes except french fries or onion rings, so you'll be sure to get an extra 400-calorie item.
Don't cook at home! You can control your cooking methods and portion sizes when you do that. Eat all your meals in restaurants where they add lots of fat (read, calories!) to make the food taste extra rich and creamy. Always include a beverage like soda or punch that has extra sugar-laden calories, and be sure to order dessert and not to split anything with anyone! Eat it all yourself and clean your plate!

The other side of the equation is exercise, of course. Don't burn calories if you want to stay overweight! Never set foot in a gym. As a matter of fact, it helps not to even own a pair of comfortable shoes so you won't be tempted to walk very much.
Use elevators and escalators instead of stairs, even when going down. Park as close as you can to your destination. Some stores have those riding carts so you don't even have to walk and push a shopping cart!
And forget about doing anything remotely "sport-like". Don't ride a bike, play frisbee or catch with your kids, pick up a tennis racket or even go to a bowling alley.
Automate everything you can: Riding mowers, snow blowers, leaf blowers, heck--pay the neighbor kid to rake leaves so you don't have any more activity than just sitting if you can help it!

Of course, the list goes on. How do you stay fat? Keep doing things that increase your calorie intake and decrease any calorie output. Make a list; post some of your ideas here to share.
When you realize what you're doing that's keeping you overweight, you'll be able to target some changes to make to get the weight loss results you've been looking for!

He's an Associate Professor of Family Medicine and Public Health at the University of Toronto, and a staff physician at St. Michael's Hospital.
It refers to not making things as easy as possible. What have we come up with that makes life easier, and how can we get the 'work' back into our day? Walking mowers instead of riding ones; standing up to change the channel on the TV instead of using the remote; getting out of your car to close your garage door. Things we used to do when obesity was not a national epidemic!
We basically don't stand up and take steps anymore.
This is about 5 miles of walking (whether it's done at once or in small increments) and can help you lose nearly a pound a week if you were previously barely moving. Try out a pedometer if you haven't before, and see how you can change your daily steps by taking the stairs, parking a little farther away, and not doing things that are automated during a typical day.
Many people find themselves constantly baffled about what is considered "good for you" and how to compose a healthy diet. Part of the reason is that science is constantly providing new discoveries. To compound this issue is a more insidious one: Every time an article is published, someone grabs and runs with it, posting "dangers" or "must have's" across the internet and news stations. Every day you see some article announcing "the 5 foods you must eat every day" or "an element found in coconut water prevents cancer" or "a byproduct of diet soda causes cancer" or "orange juice linked to diabetes".

If you paid attention to all of these contradicting announcements you'd find little continuity as far as figuring out what to eat: in fact, there are probably numerous foods on both the "must have" lists as well as the "avoid this or die" lists.

So what's a person to do?
A news report citing one article is nothing to get alarmed about. For every study showing the ill-effects of too much fruit juice you can find several on the merits of a variety of fruits; for every claim of the downside of drinking milk you can find benefits of a healthy dose of calcium and vitamin D. And for every claim that organic is necessary you'll find evidence that the non-organic counterparts are no different.

Adequacy, balance, and variety still appear to be the keys to a healthy diet!
There is no one good food or bad food.
There is no one must-have or must-avoid.
The guidelines set forth by the USDA (my plate.gov) are still good guidelines, as are the recommendations of the American Heart Association, The American Cancer Society, The American Diabetes Association and The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics: eat a variety of foods; limit fats and sweets; get plenty of fiber from whole grains and fresh fruits and vegetables.
None of these health organizations say nutrasweet causes cancer or you should be buying organic, or you must eat a tomato every day!

Here's an article by a reputable MD about the abundance of nutrition advisors who contribute to the confusion.

I've come up with a list of choice F words myself--'do's and 'don't's that will assure you stay on the right track first thing this year, and make sure next year allows you to come up with some really good resolutions that don't involve losing weight again!

Some things you need to do differently this year:

First, Don't be fooled by empty promises of "losing weight while you sleep" or "no diet or exercise needed!" If there were really a magic pill you could take and lose weight with zero effort, we wouldn't see any overweight people on the planet, would we?
Don't put yourself in a financial bind by desperately pouring money into a weight loss scheme that's expensive. It doesn't cost any more to eat healthy, when all you might actually have to do is stop buying soda, chips and sweets.

What you have to do will take some work:

Focus is of utmost importance. In order to start eating differently and being more active, a lifestyle change will have to be a priority in your life. It helps some people to make a list of the top five reasons you want to lose weight. If you can't think of that many, it's not going to be important enough to you to pass up on the snacks and desserts when a craving hits.

Form new habits: If you keep going on a diet--and then going off it when something upsets your normal schedule--it's time to think about making more permanent changes. Learn to incorporate healthy foods, smaller portions, pre-planned meals and more activity into your day. Don't worry about what you "can't" eat--instead, pay attention to things you can add to your diet that will be filling and satisfying. Drinking more water, eating more high fiber foods like fruits and vegetables, and finding more ways to be active during the day will keep your calorie intake lower and your calorie burn higher--this is the key to weight loss, after all.

Consider keeping a Food Diary. Simply writing down what you eat has been shown consistently over decades of research to promote weight loss. Of course, the way this works is by helping you think about what you eat, and often helping you realize you aren't really hungry whenyou impulsively reach for something. Writing down the 6000 calories you consume isn't magically going to lead to weight loss!

Set short term goals and rewards to keep feeling good about your accomplishments, no matter how small. If you started eating fruit or walking every day, these are habits to be rewarded, regardless of what the scale says today. Try to make it fun with games and contests, even if you're just playing against yourself. Check out my Healthy Eating Line-up game that plays like bingo: cover a square when you do something to be rewarded and try for a win every day!

Find a plan that's flexible. You should be able to exchange one food for another or one day for another. A diet that says, "this is your lunch on Thursday the 10th" doesn't allow for things that come up: what if you didn't get to the store yesterday or don't like beets?! Rigid diets are difficult to follow and just give another excuse to go off them when the going gets tough.

Finally, look for a plan you could potentially follow forever. Eating balanced meals, cooking at home more, incorporating activity into your day--these are actions that don't require going on and off a diet. If you learn to live healthier you'll naturally achieve a lower body weight and stay there.
Earlier this week I was walking from my hospital job to my car, parked in a lot about 4 blocks away. It was a lovely day, and I was happily thinking about the extra 200 steps I was getting in! Recently the hospital had re-evaluated some of their contracts and decided to eliminate leasing the lot I had been parking in until last month. The lot I now park in is about a block further from the hospital than the other lot. A quick calculation had me figuring I was burning close to an extra 20 calories a day walking back and forth to work. Could this add up over time? It most certainly could.

Take any example of a small, seemingly insignificant change in your work environment. Maybe you changed jobs and now park farther from your office than in your former job. Maybe your company moves to another floor in the building and you walk up 2 more flights each morning (and possibly each afternoon coming back from lunch). Perhaps there's a change in some email policy, or a restructuring of the chain of command that has you going just another 30 steps further back and forth to your boss's office several times a day. You may actually find yourself more fit over time, one day wondering how this miraculously happened.

The downside is the change occurring in the opposite direction. Beware!!
If you've had a change in the number of steps you take each day because of your office proximity to others or the number of flights of stairs you take, or the number of blocks you walk to and from the parking lot, this can really effect your weight over time. I can't tell you how many people call me out of desperation with a story like this: "I've gained 20 pounds over the past 2 or 3 years and I can't fit into my clothes anymore. I have no idea how this happened. Nothing has changed in my life, absolutely nothing!"

But who remembers that week in 2010 when the office moved to the first floor from the third (and you had been taking the stairs like a conscientious health-minded person)? It was just nice to be in that newly designed suite with modernized computers and beautiful carpet. You didn't miss taking those stairs ....

Who remembers that in 2009 there was a new parking lot constructed closer to your building? You may have been excited at the time, thinking "it's so long to those horrible rainy days when I'd be soaked on the way in from walking so far" but not noticed the number of steps you cut out of your typical work day....

How easy it is to forget that we moved to another part of the building in 2008, because nothing has changed (since then)!

Think hard: Have you made a minor change at work (or some other part of your daily routine) that could have eliminated 200 steps (about 10 calories) from your day? Pick a moment today while you're walking somewhere and count 200 steps--it's not much at all! Yet 10 calories a day works out to one pound of body fat a year (3650 calories). One pound of fat melted off, or one pound more stuck on!
Thirty calories a day is 3 pounds a year. Barely noticeable to anyone, since our weight fluctuates 2 or 3 pounds week to week anyway. After 3 years, though--9 pounds may be enough to notice your clothes are suddenly tight!

What's changed in your life that you didn't notice before?
How about sharing a change you can make that will help you lose weight over time? Make the commitment now and tell us about it!

http://www.mycoachlaurie.com
LAURIE BEEBEhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12127851964131081729noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6406033396226960813.post-51023703966919281672012-09-12T12:25:00.001-05:002012-09-12T12:25:56.526-05:00Eat Or Be Thin: Must We Choose?A dietitian posed a question on a professional chat board the other day. It went something like this:

"If you had to choose between eating what you like and being overweight, or giving up foods you like to stay at your ideal weight, which would you choose?"

She was looking to start a fun and interesting back-and-forth between people who said things like

"I would never give up my wine and my cheesecake no matter what--even if I was 100 pounds overweight I wouldn't be as miserable as if I had to give up the foods I love"
or people who said,
"I would give up everything but water if I had to in order to stay at my ideal weight. Food is never as important as looking and feeling my best 24/7".

But those responses never came.
Because the chat board was for dietitians.

So the responses came in (including my own) like this:

"People don't have to choose one or the other. They can eat foods they like in moderation, and add in a little more exercise when they take in more calories"
and
"No one has to give up all their favorite foods forever; it's a matter of limiting them to occasion, planning ahead, and eating more carefully in the days that follow indulgences"
and
"This is a choice I make each day: some days it's most important to me to eat healthy, exercise enough, and know I'm maintaining my best. Other days it's about a little bit of slack; having dessert or skipping a work out -- and knowing if I don't work a bit harder tomorrow my pants might not button at the end of the week!"

The woman who posed the question made another entry. She expressed her disappointment in us for not having fun with the questions; for making comments that were essentially what she called "slogans we learned in school".

But the fact is, no one has to choose one of these sides and live with it forever.
Many people feel they do have to, and that is so sabotaging to their health, their weight, their diet, and their attitude.
Because they choose to eat with abandon, feeling no other options are available; they feel guilty every time they eat a "bad" food; they feel discouraged every time they get on the scale; they feel out of control when their clothing gets snug; and they feel a sense of failure with the whole cycle.

No one has to make the choice of either/or, all or nothing, fat or hungry, healthy or happy.
And that is one lesson we, as dietitians, are still trying to teach everyone who struggles with their weight.

Now, you know there are three choices: Which do you choose?

(1) Eat whatever you want, whenever you want, never exercise and be overweight and possibly unhealthy

(2) Exercise often, restrict what you eat constantly, avoid any of your favorite indulgences for the rest of your life and maintain an ideal weight

(3) Limit your treats to 4 or 5 a week, eat reasonable portion sizes, exercise 3 to 4 times a week, and be happy, healthy and at a comfortable and pleasing weight

This afternoon I was driving home from visiting my brother who lives less than 2 hours away. As I pulled into a gas station to fill up my car, the passenger with me (who shall remain nameless) dashed into the gas-mart for a snack. The first thing I noticed as we pulled back onto the road was, of course, the caloric content of the purchases. Now it seems they are putting calories in even larger print on labels (which I think is a good thing). Here is a closer view:
As you can see, there are 260 calories in the lemonade, and 240 calories in the M&M's. If you look even more closely, you'll see underneath the 240 calorie label "per serving" on the M&M bag that there are 2 servings inside!
Consuming this little snack on the way home costs 740 calories. *Gulp*

A little snack.
One which, over time, adds up.
Ten days of this and you've gained 2 pounds. Literally.

Wake up and look at your labels people! Back away from the candy bars! Drop the soda and run! Take the time to think before making a snap decision like picking up something that looks yummy.

Because the good news is, if you can figure out what you're eating which, like this example, is dumping hundreds of extra calories into your body every day, you can LOSE 2 pounds every 10 days.

What's packing the weight on you:
Large order of fries?
Coffee drink (with cream, flavored syrup and whipped cream)?
Little pint of Haagen-Dazs? (hint: that is 4 servings!)
Second helpings at dinner?
Appetizers at the restaurant?

The list goes on and on.

Enjoy a good breakfast, lunch, dinner and healthy snack. Have a Skinny Cow ice cream treat for less than 140 calories, a 100-calorie bag of kettle corn, a smoothie with fruit and yogurt.
There are plenty of satisfying treats that taste good that don't cost you another pound this week!

Start reading your food labels and replacing 250+ calorie foods with 100-calorie alternatives.
Even just some of the time.
And write me next year when you've lost 50 or 60 pounds :)

Simply put, if you are not ready to change something in your life, you are not going
to lose the weight (and keep it off).
People give a lot of thought, researching how to follow a specific diet:
Whether it’s South Beach, Atkins, Weight Watchers, or The Cookie Diet. They read about it and talk to their friends
about it; they search for information on the internet, and save up enough money
to buy the special bars, and sometimes a membership fee.

But they don’t give any thought to what it means to change
behaviors that have become longstanding, lifestyle habits. Any habit is difficult to break. You know that’s true if you’ve ever tried to
stop smoking or biting your nails. It is
almost an instinct when you carry out a habit, and it’s very difficult to just
stop in your tracks when the urge hits.

It’s the same with eating.
We have established habits like:

- - reaching
into the cookie jar while we read the mail

-
- grabbing
a candy out of a dish when we walk by a coworker’s desk

- - settling
into a cozy chair after dinner instead of going for a walk

The good news is, there are many, many habits that
contribute to eating too much and not exercising enough. And you
only have to change a few! The fact is, you do not have to perform a
complete diet overhaul and stop eating everything you’re used to and replace it
with all the “healthy” foods you’ve never liked before. And, you don’t have to start going to the gym
for 2 hours every day or start jogging two miles every morning.

You didn’t
get to this weight overnight, ingesting huge quantities of food daily. Small habits you’ve picked up over the years:

- treating yourself to a donut in the morning

- cleaning your kids’ plates after supper

- having ice cream while watching TV in the evening

- running through the fast food drive

- driving down the block to a friend’s
house instead of walking

These all add up to what might be just 50 or 100
calories a day. But over years it can result in five pounds a
year weight gain, and after 5 years that’s 25 pounds! That’s what many are looking to lose—10 or 20
pounds of slowly accumulated weight gain that won’t come off now because of bad
habits. They aren’t very
noticeable now, because they are part of our daily routine.

The key to making
changes is choosing one change at a time

fast foods, chocolate, and desserts and start eating breakfast, packing your
lunch and going to the gym every day all at once. And that you can keep that up for more than a
week! It’s just too much to humanly
expect.

Fast foods are certainly a fact of life. Sometimes we're in a hurry and the drive-thru window is our only option. And of course, we love the taste of our favorite burger joint meals!
Every chain restaurant has their own website, detailing all the nutritionals for each menu item. But that can be quite difficult to plow through while we're sitting in the drive-thru lane. So I've come up with a few easy steps to help you plan meals that are fast, tasty, and low enough in calories to help you actually lose weight:

STEP 1: Make a list of your top 3 or 4 fast food restaurants.

STEP 2: Go to their website to get started. (It's important to go to the company website, and not another site that lists calorie content of foods. Other sites have information entered by helpful dieters that are often incorrect.)

STEP 3: Decide what information is most important to you. Calories are likely to be your priority. You may also be watching your fat, carbs, or sodium. These can all be very high, even when calories are not.

STEP 4: Make note of the menu items you are most likely to order. If you don't like chicken salad, it's not worth your time to see that this item is low in fat and calories. Unless you would actually choose an item solely based on the fact that it's low-cal, look at the sandwiches, wraps and salads you are most likely to eat. You will get both pleasant surprises and extreme shocks when you see the actual calorie levels. Amazingly, you will find that you can save hundreds of calories in some cases by ordering a hamburger and fries, instead of what you thought was a healthy fish sandwich! Some of the chicken sandwiches have over 700 calories because they are fried, made with cheese, topped with sauces, and in some cases even have their buns buttered. This is information you have no way of knowing until you look at the website from the fast food chain that gives you this information.

STEP 5: Make your menus. Once you find the lower cal (or low fat/carb/sodium) choices, build a few meals. I suggest printing them each on an index card that will be easy to carry in your purse or your glove compartment. You don't have to remember anything except the note cards: when you drive up to the window, you'll have all the information you need. You'll know what sandwich or salad to order, what you can have with it, what to order it without (such as mayonnaise) and how many calories you're getting, all from your handy notes.

Remember the 100 Calorie Tip: For every hundred calories you save on your lunch, you can lose a pound at the end of this month. I know it doesn't sound like much, but you can easily save 400 calories a day from your new smart fast food choices. This is going to make a four pound deficit this month without going on a diet or being hungry. That means eating smart will bring a 36 pound weight loss by this time next year, simply by taking an hour this weekend to write out your smart fast food choices. Who wouldn't want to lose that?!

On June 27 the FDA gave the green light to the newest prescription weight loss drug, called Belviq (lorcaserin hydrochloride), describing it as an adjunct to a healthy diet and exercise for chronic weight management. As with any drug, there are potential side effects; although none serious enough to prevent the FDA from giving the go ahead for use of this drug with people who have a BMI 30 or greater, or a BMI of 27 or greater with concurrent morbidities such as diabetes or high blood pressure. (Ideal BMI range is 18-25 and you can calculate yours here.) When someone has conditions that could be improved with weight loss, the benefits of taking the drug often outweigh the possible complications that could arise from taking the prescription medication.

I find the results quite disappointing for a prescription weight-loss drug that works by helping to reduce appetite. Trial participants taking Belviq for up to one year lost an average of 3 to 3.7 percent of their body weight. For a 250-pound person this is 7.5 to 10 pounds--hardly a noticeable amount for an obese individual. To make these results even more discouraging, the trial also included counseling for lifestyle modification including a lower calorie diet and exercise. Take note, this means there is no chance that this is the magic pill you've been waiting for!

Another drug expected to receive approval some time in 2012 is Qnexa. This prescription is a combination of two drugs; one (phentermine) that acts as an appetite suppressant and the other (topiramate--prescribed as an anticonvulsant) found to have weight loss properties. These studies show a little more promise for weight loss than Belviq, with study participants averaging closer to 10% loss of their initial body weight over a year or two. As with Belviq, the drug is supposed to be used in combination with a reduced-calorie diet and exercise program.

Losing 10% of your body weight can, in many cases, improve blood pressure, cholesterol, and glucose levels, even reducing the need for medication. So it's still a good plan if nothing's worked in the past to promote lasting weight loss. Perhaps taking the pill gives some people the little boost they need to get moving on their new diet and exercise regimen. But if you just eat a little less and move a little more, you could lose more weight in less time. And with zero potential for serious side effects.

Last week I was seeing a new weight loss client who brought along her adult daughter, telling me, "We both want to lose weight". I thought it was great they each had a support system and "diet buddy". They both told me about diets they had been on in the past, and how difficult they found it to lose weight and keep it off--stories I hear every day.
I like to remind my clients of some of the reasons it is difficult to lose weight. Humans, after all, are programmed to want to eat whenever food is available. Our race would not have survived if we did not want to eat at every opportunity, or were just satisfied with a few nuts and berries.
Unfortunately for people who want to lose weight, food is everywhere now, and very easy to get: Drive through fast food, candy bars at every check-out lane, hot dogs and donuts when you go inside to pay for your gasoline, snacks at work, donuts at meetings and appetizers at friends' homes.
And, research shows, the portions are so large now compared to a few decades ago. Grabbing a burger, fries and a soda can mean nearly twice the calories it used to, with double burgers, extra large fries, and 32-oz sodas being the norm. You can see just how much things have changed in this helpful program brought to you by the National Institute of Health called Portion Distortion.

This prompted a comment from the daughter about how large the servings are in restaurants. She told me about a place where she and her husband had dined recently: "We are never going back there. The plate of food he got was so humongous, he actually had to rest halfway through the meal. He had to stop and take a break before he could finish it all. And when we left he was uncomfortably full. We aren't going back there again--it was a terrible experience."

I was speechless. My first thought--which I had to suppress from exclaiming--was, "Am I on Candid Camera?" Did she really just blame the restaurant for giving her husband too much food? Did they actually not see any option, obvious to every other person out there? Have they never left food on their plate or asked for a take-home container?

Yes, it's hard enough in all our fast-paced and hectic lives, to ignore yummy calorie-dense foods tempting us at every turn, to find time to exercise, and to resist craving the immense satisfaction we get from savoring a sweet or salty snack. It's hard enough to stop eating something we like when there's more of it, or to plop down on the couch instead of lacing up our sneakers and going for a walk.

Weight loss is hard. Don't make it harder by persisting to be a member of the clean plate club; by eating everything that is in front of you all the time; by ignoring the signs your body is sending you: "Stomach Ache!!" it screams. "Stop eating now or you'll be sorry in the next 10 minutes!!"

Just listen.

There are a lot of ways to lose weight. Some are tough; they require structure and discipline, planning and changing, hard work and deprivation.
And sometimes it just requires that you stop eating when you're full.
http://www.mycoachlaurie.com
LAURIE BEEBEhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12127851964131081729noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6406033396226960813.post-68663746641643416162012-03-14T10:38:00.000-05:002012-03-14T10:38:56.296-05:00Uncle Sam Whole Wheat Cereal by Attune Foods

I agreed to try a box of this cereal when a dietitian with Attune foods offered it to me. I have to admit, it's not something I would normally reach for on the grocery shelf. With the only ingredients being whole wheat, flaxseed, barley malt and salt, I really thought it would taste like sawdust.

What a surprise! Somehow it tastes like a sweetened cereal. It has lots of crunch, and is very satisfying. As soon as I tasted it, I started thinking of how I could use it in recipes: It would be great as a topper for peach crisp! Then I found out their website already offers dozens of recipes that use the cereal (http://www.attunefoods.com/products/Uncle-Sam/uncle-sam-original-heart-healthy-cereal-10oz/recipes). How convenient.

With 10 grams of fiber in a serving, I had to stop myself from pouring a second bowl--I wasn't sure what kind of digestive consequences there could be from all the extra fiber. Happily, my GI tract loved it and I don't have to worry about unpleasant grumblings as is sometimes the case when a new fiber is introduced into the diet.

I still have to get used to those whole flaxseeds in the cereal. I love the wheat flakes, but the little seeds give a different mouthfeel and tend to get stuck in between teeth.

The upsides are plentiful, though: Whole grain, 10 grams of fiber per bowl, 7 grams of protein, and less than a gram of sugar. It's a great breakfast for me with a nice crunchy texture and keeps me full through the morning until lunch time.

I would definitely recommend trying it!
http://www.mycoachlaurie.com
LAURIE BEEBEhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12127851964131081729noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6406033396226960813.post-60179981497854087432012-01-14T19:37:00.000-06:002012-01-14T19:37:23.816-06:00Fiber One 90-Calorie Brownies Are Yummy!

I heard about these Fiber One Brownies and thought I would give them a try. I'm always looking for some redeeming value in a sweet food with otherwise empty calories. It's nice to be able to feel like I'm getting something good-for-you while enjoying a tasty treat. And with only 90 Calories, what have you got to lose?

What a great surprise these were! A really decent sized brownie (I was expecting something half the size) that is moist and cakey. It sure doesn't taste like fiber, but each yummy individually-wrapped brownie--drizzled with peanut butter frosting--has 5 grams of fiber.

I would eat these even if they couldn't boast 20 percent of the daily fiber recommendation, since they have only 90 calories. It's not easy to find something that tastes so good and lasts more than two bites with under a hundred calories.

I will definitely be picking up more of these next time I go to the grocery store.
http://www.mycoachlaurie.com
LAURIE BEEBEhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12127851964131081729noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6406033396226960813.post-56515037830476381982011-11-02T11:02:00.000-05:002011-11-02T11:02:42.428-05:00Ratings on the Most Popular Diets!I love this ratings article from U.S.News on the top 20 most popular diets and how healthy they are. The panel of experts included registered dietitians, physicians, and others who specialize in healthy eating behaviors and food science.
I found it interesting that only two of the diets worked for the thousands of people surveyed who had tried the diets: Weight Watchers (which received a 4.4 out of 5 rating, and was ranked #6 for healthy diets), and a modified form of the Atkins diet called Eco-Atkins (ranking #15 and rated 3.1 out of 5 starts).
Click on the name of any diet and it brings you to a page showing how it rates for ease of following, support, nutrition, balance, and other factors.
The number one diet: The DASH diet plan, formulated for preventing high blood pressure. This diet is high in fiber, potassium and calcium; low in sodium and fat; composed of very nutritionally dense foods. It only received 3 stars for how easy it is to follow, but is healthy for virtually anyone who wants to lose weight, control diabetes, control hypertension, and eat for a healthy heart.

Visit this article and do some research before you start your next eating plan!
It's only the beginning of being surrounded by tempting treats: People inviting you to parties, bringing in leftover candy from trick-or-treaters, leading up to more and more cookies and candies from Thanksgiving through Christmas. What's a sensible person to do?

Personally, I buy candy I don't like. I'm unusual in the sense that I'm not a big fan of chocolate. For me, buying Snickers fun-size bars or Milky Ways is not going to tempt me when they're around for the kiddies. If you are a chocoholic, what kind of candy doesn't interest you? Maybe candy corn does nothing for you (one of my favorites!), or the popular Sponge-Bob Crabby Patties turn you off. Choose whatever bags of candy you find least interesting so the temptation won't be there.
If you do have candy in the house that tempts you, ask someone to hide it for you so it will be out of sight. I usually hide treats from my family members in the potholder drawer where I know they will never venture. They'll know a place you won't look, too, like ... well, I don't want to give away any secrets!
So, the first step: Buy candy you aren't interested in, and second, have someone else be "keeper of the candy" until Halloween is over.
Have leftovers? Bring them to your workplace or, better yet, donate them to your local food pantry where they will toss a few pieces in with every family's grocery bag.
http://www.mycoachlaurie.com
LAURIE BEEBEhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12127851964131081729noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6406033396226960813.post-19018642997173013912011-05-15T12:38:00.000-05:002011-05-15T12:38:22.097-05:00"I Can't Afford to Eat Healthy" Might Just be Another Excuse

As a registered dietitian, "I can't afford to buy healthy food" is a response I hear all too often from people who have diets too high in calories, fat, sodium, or some other nutrient that should be consumed in moderation. I would be tempted to be empathetic if they were just 20 pounds overweight and not 50, or if they didn't spend so much money on cigarettes, alcohol or other "extras" like acrylic nail manicures and tattoos.

When the patients I saw in a hospital a few years ago regularly told me, "I can't follow this low fat/low sugar/low salt [fill in the appropriate healthy diet] prescription because I rely on assistance from food stamps/the local food pantry/the soup kitchen," I set out to rectify the situation in my own town: I signed up to volunteer at my local food pantry.

The other volunteers at the food pantry made me feel welcome and were excited to show me around. I explained that I wanted to help re-organize the standard food list to include special foods for people who had to follow diets for their medical conditions. "They should be able to have healthy options to choose from, like canned fruit packed in its own juice instead of in heavy syrup, low-sodium canned soups, and whole grain products," I informed them.

"Oh, we have those," the staff told me. "All they have to do is let us know what they're looking for and we're happy to provide the alternative selections. We regularly stock cereals without added sugar, whole grain breads and rice, low sodium products and sugar-free beverages."

Through my weeks volunteering over a period of two years, I seldom found anyone who would ask for "special diet food". There were signs up announcing the presence of a Registered Dietitian to help guide the patrons for healthier choices depending on their diet needs, and occasionally someone would have questions about losing weight or lowering their blood pressure. For the most part, though, the staff would be frustrated at the poor choices made by the customers. While there were a range of varieties available (people couldn't be forced to take brown rice over white, fruit juice over punch, or chicken over hot dogs), the vast majority of our disadvantaged citizens opted for convenience over health. When local farms would drop off cases of fresh vegetables, they would pile up during the week until the staff took them home on the weekend in lieu of tossing them out because they grew rotten. "But I don't want to have to peel vegetables and cook them," the clients would complain. "I just want something I can open and serve." I'm not sure why they were too busy to cook, since the majority were unemployed.

Recently in the hospital where I work I had a 250-pound woman explain why she couldn't lose weight: "I can't afford fresh fruits and vegetables," she said. I asked, "Can you afford canned fruit and frozen vegetables?" and she said, "yes." Okay, next excuse?
By the way, she also refused to stop buying her cans of cola because she 'had' to have at least 3 a day.

Just because you can get dollar meals at fast food restaurants doesn't mean "food that is bad for you is cheaper". How about foregoing soda and chips and using that money to buy fruit and vegetables? How about making choices that make sense, like drinking skim milk instead of fruit punch or beer?

Not being able to afford "healthy" food is a poor excuse for being overweight. Fresh food that is not processed and can be prepared to be low in calories, sodium and sugar does not have to be expensive; no one is suggested you buy organic milk or salmon steaks when non-fat dry milk and canned tuna provide similar nutrients and cost less than half as much.

Need help planning healthy meals on a budget? There are plenty of resources available. Don't have a computer to look these up? Your local library will let you sign on there for hours. Start with the USDA's "Thrifty Meal Plan" download which provides shopping tips, recipes, and menus on a budget. http://www.cnpp.usda.gov/publications/foodplans/miscpubs/foodplansrecipebook.pdf

Yes, isn't it ironic, the seriousness of the billboard declaring that childhood obesity is a real health issue, with the happy girl underneath proudly displaying two bags full of fast food! The fast food picture features--not a yogurt parfait or a carton of low-fat milk (no, that might be a decent message)--but a huge order of fries, a soda, and a sandwich that looks like it contains a fried chicken patty.
Are we sending mixed messages?
Do we tell people to eat healthy foods and then rationalize why burgers and fries are okay sometimes? Are you telling your kids one thing but then showing them something else? Should the schools go back to serving a balanced meal without letting kids have the choice of burgers from the grill or chips from the vending machine?
Post your comments and let's get a discussion going: How do you think we can help raise this generation to make healthier choices and live longer without chronic diseases popping up in their 20's!
http://www.mycoachlaurie.com
LAURIE BEEBEhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12127851964131081729noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6406033396226960813.post-77313937901093424192010-10-30T16:38:00.000-05:002010-10-30T16:38:16.466-05:00Surrounded by Food--No Wonder We're FatOne of the reasons our society is struggling with obesity is because of our innate drive to obtain food, coupled with the present-day availability of food. It makes sense that we want food whenever we see it; this is part of what has kept the human race surviving for so long. We get the energy and nutrition we need from food, and in the remote past (thankfully not recently for most of us) food wasn't always available. We had to eat it when we saw it.
Now, however, it's become a different story. Food is wherever we are. We store food from the grocery store in our house indefinitely, perhaps in pantries, and perhaps on the table next to where we watch TV.
For the times we are out of the house we stash some in our purse or backpack or in our desk drawers at work.
If we're going to be on the road, we stash a snack in our glove compartment. That's just in case there isn't a convenient fast food drive-thru window nearby on our daily travels.
If we stop to get gasoline, we can run into the attached market to get a high-calorie coffee drink, some pizza, donuts, or packaged snacks for the road.
When we go to school--from primary grades through college campuses--we can find hot food stands, fast food counters, and vending machines overflowing with a vast selection of mini-meals and snacks.
If we visit a sick friend in the hospital or stop by an office building there's usually a cafeteria available--if not there are certainly vending machines.
And now, this weekend, I have really seen it all--not just a vending machine with snacks in the hotel where I stopped to spend the night in Springfield, Illinois; not just a vending machine to dispense a drink in case I needed something to quench my thirst in the hours between having dinner and retiring for the night. No, gentle readers, it was a vending machine that dispensed hot fast food. Just in case I awoke during the night, before the continental breakfast service started at 6 am, and was too befuddled to make my way across the street to the Bob Evans or the McDonald's... or perhaps they were closed at this hour? Just in case, there is a vending machine in the hotel that will dispense for me a plate of hot wings, or a chicken sandwich, or french fries smothered with cheese. On the outside chance that I had forgotten to pack some snacks to tide me over, or if I didn't find in the vending machine selection of candy bars and pretzels anything that I thought could possibly satisfy my hunger, and just in case I couldn't survive waiting the few hours until toast and cereal were available... thank goodness, I can get some hot and filling food RIGHT NOW!
http://www.mycoachlaurie.com
LAURIE BEEBEhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12127851964131081729noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6406033396226960813.post-28056523601376556322010-04-09T20:58:00.000-05:002010-04-09T20:58:05.708-05:00Dinner For Busy Moms!Check out the new book, "Dinner for Busy Moms" by Jeanne Muchnick, now available. If you have children, one of the best lessons you can teach them is how to eat healthy and have a good attitude about food and nutrition. Setting an example is even more important than telling them to "eat your veggies", so get on board with good eating habits yourself and keep the whole family eating well.

Then again, bulimia wasn't officially classified until the 1980's. Orthorexia is a disordered type of eating where the person focuses on avoiding foods and ingredients they believe are bad for them.

In a balanced life, people enjoy foods they like to eat and limit foods that aren't good for them. Some people, of course, eat what they like regardless of whether it's good for them or not. People with orthorexia do not see food as something enjoyable. They eat because they want to be nourished. They avoid certain fats or additives or food components because they want to be healthy. Ironically this condition leads to poor health in many ways.

Some foods are excluded to the extent that the person may suffer a deficiency of fat, protein, vitamins, or minerals. Usually too much weight is lost and the person suffers some degree of malnutrition. Emotionally, much of the person's time is spent figuring out what to eat, reading labels, reading about the latest "bad" food and feeling near phobic about ingesting something they view as toxic.

Their social life is affected because they can't eat in restaurants and they can't eat what other people might be serving. They become obsessed with healthy eating to the point that it's not healthy anymore.

Signs that someone is orthorexic include focusing hours a day on purchasing and planning meals, staunch avoidance of certain classes of foods (eg, no fat, or no dairy, or no processed food, or no additives), obsessively reading labels, and often having the same food every day for each meal. For example it would be common to hear someone say, "I have whole grain cooked hot cereal for breakfast with rice milk, organic yogurt and carrot sticks for lunch, grain-fed chicken with brown rice for dinner, and an apple or rice cake if I want a snack". At first glance this may sound healthy, but the diet is actually quite low in calories (less than 800), low in protein (less than 45 grams) and almost devoid of fat and vitamin C.

It is unfortunate that the initial goal to be healthy actually leads to health problems in many of these people (more commonly they are women, as is true for other eating disorders as well). If you or someone you know fits some of this description it's important to find a trusted health professional to speak with. You can get back on the right track and get your health back!

http://www.mycoachlaurie.com
LAURIE BEEBEhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12127851964131081729noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6406033396226960813.post-9961006660591969112010-03-16T03:33:00.002-05:002010-03-16T03:33:00.205-05:00More Delicious Jerky Flavors!

You may remember about a year ago I told you about this great pineapple jerky I had tried from Jerky.com that was sooo delicious! This week I had the opportunity to try two of their new products, Sweet and Spicy Orange Beef Jerky and Sweet and Spicy Mango Beef Jerky from Spencer's Jerky products. Wow!

First of all, as a dietitian I love the fact that a serving is just 100 calories. It's a great alternative to many of the popular100 calorie snack packages that contain just a handful of little cookies or pretzels that doesn't keep you full for much longer than 10 minutes. For just 100 calories, a full ounce of jerky (about 4 or 5 strips) provides 15 grams of protein, 2.5 grams of fat and 4 grams of carbohydrate. It's really going to tide you over until the next meal.

Second, the flavor is absolutely savory! Enjoy the sweet taste from the fruit mixed with the spicy taste from the seasonings, all melded together with the chewy beef texture. It's not tough or dry like some other jerkys I have tried, but has a great consistency that's as enjoyable as the tang of whichever variety you choose.
You can order some at beef jerky and find dozens of options to suit your personal taste.

They also have turkey jerky if you, or someone you know, prefers turkey to beef!
http://www.mycoachlaurie.com
LAURIE BEEBEhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12127851964131081729noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6406033396226960813.post-63528041357812468222010-02-11T14:49:00.000-06:002010-02-11T14:49:01.141-06:00Taking the Steps to Lose Weight

One of the greatest steps anyone can take in the journey to weight loss is to incorporate habits into your lifestyle that burn more calories or lead you to consume fewer calories. Examples include keeping a food diary, going for a morning walk, planning your meals ahead of time, carrying healthy snacks with you, or taking the stairs whenever possible.

Let's look at taking the stairs: Are there stairs where you work or where you live? Do you usually opt for the elevator if there is one? Skipping the opportunity to run up a few stairs could be the reason you gradually put on two or three pounds each year! Not noticable at first, these few pounds creep up until suddenly you can't fit into your clothes and wonder how this could have happened.

Taking one flight of stairs barely burns 10 calories. Realistically, going down 10 steps might just burn one single calorie. However that is one more than you burn by taking the elevator ... and if you're doing it every day, these calories add up!

If you take a flight of stairs every chance you get, how many flights would you climb in a day? If it's too overwhelming to walk 15 flights to your destination you could you walk up 5 flights and then take the elevator the rest of the way! Does this sound more appealing knowing it burns off 5 pounds a year?!

If this seems too insignificant to notice, think again: This is just one example of 5 flights of steps. Review all the opportunities facing you each day, as you step up a flight to a friend's apartment, up to the next floor of offices at work, up to a doctor's appointment in the medical building, or up to the shoe section in the department store.

Every flight each day adds up to one pound a year you could lose: Five flights = five pounds; ten flights = ten pounds.... how would you feel next year at this time if you were ten pounds lighter and all you had to do was take the stairs?

Try starting a log for yourself: give yourself one "point" for each flight you take. Watch how quickly you get used to taking more and more flights without being short of breath. Soon it becomes habit. Next year you're in a smaller pants size, voila!
http://www.mycoachlaurie.com
LAURIE BEEBEhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12127851964131081729noreply@blogger.com3
